April TriggerTalk Article – A Great Responsibility

I am going to take a break from Politics this month.  With gun control rhetoric in the news and a new anti-gun Supreme Court nominee by the current occupant of the Whitehouse, I just cannot take it anymore!

Let’s just sit back and talk about the joys we get from firearms ownership. I say firearms because too many people refer to any gun as a weapon. When teaching gun classes I always say “firearm”, whether it is a weapon or not depends on the circumstances of my usage.

While many of us may have first seen firearms used in the movies or television, my first actual experience with a gun not an air rifle was with a .22 Long Rifle pump action long gun.

Long graceful curved lines, deep dark bluing on the metal parts and a silky smooth oiled wood stock just like fine furniture.  Each part has a function, simple and efficient in design and precise in execution.  Even today I sometimes think of gun design as art.

At first I was under the careful direction and control of my Grandfather.  “Papa” taught me to plant the stock firmly into my shoulder, “you shake hands with a pistol and you hug a rifle”. He taught me how to breathe and to shoot from a rest to prevent movement, shooting from standing or kneeling positions would come later.

“Squeeze the trigger, don’t jerk it” he would remind me, and the relationship between the front sight and the rear sight quickly became clear in both my mind and eye.  Today a crystal clear sight picture is something my ageing eyes only vaguely remember, as I relay the same advice to my own Grandsons.

I remember the first time I was allowed to go out with the rifle by myself, the feeling of pride and accomplishment was almost overwhelming.  I had been taught the mechanics of shooting, and the ethics of using a firearm.  Now at the age of Eight years old I was entrusted with great responsibility.

Pirates were fabled to lust over chests of buried treasure: gold coins with rubies and emeralds. To me there was nothing more beautiful than a new box of 22’s, and my eyes rolled into my head if Papa gave me a whole brick (500).  The brass color of the bullets was my gold; I could run my fingers through them and envision the fun ahead.

50 rounds was a whole afternoon of shooting, tin cans would fall before me, each shot closer to the center , and paper targets were suitably shredded. By the end of the day I was playing the same games as the boys on the basketball court. If I make this shot I will “Save the World” The Crowd Roars!  Earth is Saved!

That is how I like to think of my beginnings with this fine pastime.  That is why it is worth our time to take the young people in your family to the Range and pass your knowledge and family heritage on to the next generation.

Is it a weapon?  It can be, it is up to us to know the difference.

2016 SHOT Show

Las VegasI had a great time this past week at the 2016 SHOT Show in Las Vegas.

Statistics:

The SHOT (Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade show ) Show features more than 1,600 exhibitors filling booth space covering 630,000 square feet or about 14.5 acres.

The largest trade show of its kind in the world and the fifth largest trade show in Las Vegas. There are 12 ½ miles of aisles in the show and I have hit about a third of them today

Attendance is more than 62,000 industry professionals (not open to the general public) from all 50 states and 100 countries.

The show is divided into several different areas:

General shooting and Hunting

Firearms and Ammunition,

Law Enforcement and Tactical Gear

New Product Center

Next Generation of exhibitors

Some of the New Products I saw:

Kimber 6S Revolver small stainless hammerless 6 shot, first from the semi auto company

Kimber

Ruger American Pistol in 45 and 9mm full size double stack

Ruger

Spent time with Paul Lemke from Polycase ammunition

ARX ARX2

We talked about the new polymer technologies, the various calibers the ammo is offered in and the potential for use as reloading components for hand loaders. He indicated they are beginning to load in rifle calibers. Some people have asked about the effectiveness of the projectile design because it is not an expanding bullet, but the design creates a massive hydraulic shock. I reviewed some images from a hog hunt and it was very impressive results.

Hickok45’s real name is Greg Kinman (born July 1950) [+]He is perhaps best known for his firearm related videos on YouTube[+] He lives in the Pleasant View, Tennessee area and is a retired English teacher from Franklin Road Academy in Nashville, Tennessee[+] He has a huge shooting range and compound in his backyard, which is frequently shown in his YouTube videos.   On January 6th 2016, the channel was briefly banned by YouTube for “policy violations”, but was reactivated later that day. In a YouTube video after the incident, he explains that he still does not know what caused them to reinstate the account. He postulates that support from other YouTube channels like IraqVeteran8888 and tnoutdoors9, as well as all of his viewers, may have been the deciding factor. [+][+]

He started the YouTube channel in January 6, 2007, with his son John doing most of the filming.  He was inspired to create it after teaching the Western novel Shane to his middle-school classroom. Most of his early videos were done wearing cowboy outfits and shooting Wild West era weaponry. ⁣Hickok45 quotes that “YouTube puts me in touch with new shooters, young people and just anybody, to educate them a little bit about gun safety”. [+] ⁣The video that got him viral was his carving of a pumpkin with a .40 cal Glock.[+] His ‘shooting compound’ where most of his videos take places is located at 1241 Old Clarksville Pike, Pleasant View, TN 37146. [+]

Greg has turned down multiple offers from YouTube and other networks to monetize his videos, but has generally declined them out of principle and the fact that he wants to remain independent. He has nearly 1000 videos as of Dec 2015. [+]

Greg is a former Tennessee reserve deputy, but has no military experience.
