Take a look at the idiotic device that the Ferguson, MO Police dept. is going to be testing. The first shot fires into a pingpong ball sized polymer projectile to be “Less than Lethal” and then if the assailant keeps attacking the officer the second and subsequent rounds will be normal.
Looks like you would need to leave it on all the time, because you certainly don’t have time to put in on in an emergency!
