Recently Anti-gun politicians and the media have been praising two innovations claimed to reduce gun violence. According to them, Micro-Stamping and Smart-Guns are just around the corner and for just a small increase in cost these will prevent accidental shootings and reduce violence. How could anybody be against this? We must do it “For the Children”.
The problem is these technologies are neither production feasible nor a proven concept to do what is being heralded.
MICRO-STAMPING is the process of engraving a unique identification number on the breech face and firing pin on new semi-auto pistols. In theory Law Enforcement will simply go to the crime scene, pick up brass casings to read the micro-stamp and go pick up the bad guy at his home.
Already the law in California, gun manufacturers have no way to comply with this directive. No guns can be added to the list of allowed guns effectively shut-down sales of new Semi-Auto Pistols. Both Smith &Wesson and Ruger have announced they will no longer offer pistols for sale in CA.
It does not take a mental giant to defeat this requirement. Firing pins can be replaced in minutes and a light touch with a Dremel or file will obliterate the identifier. A quick trip to a firing range to get some used brass to scatter around the crime scene would also throw Law Enforcement of the trail. Lastly, if the Criminal used a revolver there will be NO shells casings on the ground to pick-up. With Micro-Stamping easily defeated lawmakers are considering adding a yearly inspection requirement (and FEE!) to ensure the identifier is still in place.
Do they really believe a murderer, rapist, or bank robber is going to bring his gun in each year for an inspection? Is this really about safety or controlling Law Abiding citizens?
Now “Smart Guns “enter the scene and New Hampshire lawmakers have a law on the books that once such a device is available to consumers, all new guns must be equipped for sale within 3 years. These uninformed bureaucrats have proposed requiring existing guns to be retro-fitted.
Using an RFID chip to identify an authorized user is pulling the trigger, the gun utilizes electronic sensors and a battery. The user must wear a “watch-like’ device on their wrist to “talk” to the gun. “Production” guns equipped with this technology are already on sale. The single model available: a .22 pistol retails for ONLY $1399, and the wrist device is another $399.
Remember to put the wrist device each time you think you might be murdered or raped, and in case your regular shooting arm is injured in the conflict you better buy a second wrist device for your other arm. The manufacture also indicates you can get a credit card type device for your wallet that you can hold next to the gun to allow it to shoot.
I can hear it now: “Please Mr. Murderer hold on a minute while I get my gun enabling device from my wallet”
A Massachusetts lawmaker admitted they got the idea from the latest James Bond movie and speculated on the ability to turn off all guns in “Gun Free Zones” or in an “emergency” to protect the public. A similar idea was recently proposed by Eric Holder, our Attorney General.I shudder to think about a scenario where a criminal (or government) comes up with a “jamming” device.
Consider the effects of large caliber recoil on the device. What is the durability and battery life? How often does your cell phone or Bluetooth device malfunction? Would you be satisfied (or dead) with 90-95% reliability?
Gun Control is not about safety, it is about Control and these measures only affect law abiding citizens.
